Our Mission

The mission of the Black Star Line Literacy Bus is to break down barriers to reading by bringing books, educators, and support directly to the communities that need it most. We’re here to make literacy accessible, mobile, and rooted in real connection — one neighborhood, one family, one reader at a time.

Mobile literacy hub bringing books, learning, and support directly into the community

Free book pop‑ups for children at schools, juvenile facilities, and non-profits

Hosts reading sessions, workshops, and youth literacy activities during pop‑ups

Quarterly reading incentives for children who complete books and track their progress

Also operates as a mobile bookstore — selling books and merchandise to support Urban Reads Foundation programming

Expands access for families who can’t get to a bookstore or library

Built from lived experience and community need

A moving symbol of access, empowerment, and opportunity

76% of people in prison & 85 % juveniles in court are illiterate, while 46 million people are reading below a 6th-grade reading level
